What positive impact has the #MeToo movement had?

Oct 11, 2019 | Sexual Abuse

Unless you have been cut off from all modern forms of communication in Washington, you have heard about the #MeToo movement. This empowering campaign has helped many victims of sexual abuse come forward and talk about their experiences. It has even led to some arrests. In any case, there has been some positive things that have come from this movement that will continue to have a lasting effect on society.

Vox reports that the #MeToo movement has allowed the public to see the extent of the problem with sexual harassment and abuse of women. Having women add the hashtag to their social media posts had a profound impact on educating those who may have been unaware or who simply did not want to recognize that these things happen to almost every woman at some point in her life.

The movement has also prompted state governments to take a stance. Some states are expanding protection for workers to help prevent sexual harassment. States have also created new laws that help make it easier for people to speak out by banning nondisclosure agreements that prevent people from talking about sexual harassment.

Companies are changing policies and making moves to help create environments that do not encourage sexual harassment. For example, there is a move to end tipping so that servers do not feel as if they have to take harassment or risk their tips.

This is only a small look at how this very basic and simple movement made waves and encouraged change. If people continue to speak out, it can help to make sexual harassment and abuse a thing of the past. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
